Getting your Paraguay Visa in La Paz

If you’re not European or South American and you want to visit Paraguay, your going to need a pre-arranged visa.  Okay some countries including Canada can get Visa’s on arrival if flying in to Paraguay’s major airport in Asuncion, but what fun is that when you can instead embark on what I’m told is a crazy bus journey from Bolivia!  This article is another one more looking to help other travellers than relate any great travel experience I’ve had.

To get your visa for Paraguay in La Paz the first step is simple, get yourself to the La Paz Paraguayan consulate which can be found in one of the more upscale neighbourhoods of La Paz, about 3 km from the historical centre, doable as a walk but well served by micros and about a 12 bolivianos taxi ride away for those like me who are a little lazy at such altitudes.  Here is the full address of the embassy.

**For the Record Paraguay has 2 more offices in Bolivia in the form of consulates in Santa Cruz, and Villamontes.

I take a taxi the first time around and am dropped off on the corner of 6 de Agosto and Pedro Salazar and find my way into the right entrance eventually, climbing up to the second floor and being greeted by the friendly security guard.  Here’s a few pictures to guide you.

You want to go up both flights of stairs as it's really floor 2.5.

Once there I’m asked to fill out two copies of the application form and asked to make sure I have everything they require to issue the visa, here is the complete list.

–  2 copies of the forms given to you filled out completely
– 2 passport photos in colour
– 2 photocopies of your passport photo page
– 2 photocopies of your entry stamp to Bolivia
– a photocopy of your credit card both sides
– a copy of your onward travel ticket if you’re flying in. (you don’t need to show anything if going by bus.)

The cost of the visa for Canadians is as follows:  150 USD for 90 day single entry visa or 165 USD for Multiple Entry 90 Day Visa.

*If you need to make photocopies there are tons of places nearby, passport photo huts are harder to come by which is why I always travel with several in my wallet.

Once they’ve seen you have everything you need they will now send you out of the embassy to Banco Nacion which is opposite the plaza one block up Pedro Salazar (the directions they gave me weren’t great but it’s right opposite the plaza on Belisario Salinas street)

It’s often a long wait in Bolivian banks but you take your number, wait your tunr then show the teller the bank account you want to pay and give them the cash in USD.  (Multiple entry visa for me was 165 and they provided change from 180 USD without a problem).  The bank will give you a receipt then you go back to the embassy and hand in all your documentation which the diplomat reviews before accepting.  Normally it takes three full business days and when I handed mine in Wednesday around noon I was told monday it would be ready.  That said when I told them I was planning to leave La Paz on the weekend he told me to come back 48 hours later on Friday at noon and sure enough my visa was ready.  It’s a thing of beauty in some ways, though the two full pages in your passport does seem needlessly excessive.

Oh and one last tip, while in the neighbourhood head about a block from the plaza to Vinapho for an amazing South East Asian lunch or dinner.  It’s highly delicious and a great change from the typical South American fare.
