Wandering in Salta

Salta, a city a million strong according to my cab driver, is a big tourist destination and is famous for it’s empanadas (which are highly delicious), that said, what it’s really famous for, and the reason tourists flock to it, is for the incredible landscapes of the unique section of the Andes mountains all around it.  The rock here is multicoloured and the tiny towns dotting the mountains are all welcoming and very pretty.

In Salta proper, there’s really not all that much to do outside of a few museums, but like any city there’s always sights to see and one of my favourite things to do in a city is just to have an unmapped wander and see what I encounter.  Rather than go into detail I think it’s best to just so you some snapshots of the walk, including a lot of the impressive churches in the city, which remind me of Italy with their bright colours and ornate insides.

A few recommendations for Salta before we get to the photos:  Eat the empanadas, they sell them by the dozen and if you find the right place they’re pretty cheap.  Also if you stay at the lovely Salta por Siempre on a Wednesday or Saturday, sign up for the barbecue (140 Pesos, 14 CAD), it is totally worth it.
