Still somewhat recovering from the incredible experience of going into the water with great whites and knowing I have a 20 day intense marathon camping trip coming up, I decide it’s best to have a calm day and jsut explore the beautiful vibrant city which is cape town. One tour guide later tells me it’s the world’s most diverse city, and after spending a day walking around it it feelslike that could be true.
I head out of Zebra crossing and make my way slowly towards long street which will be my starting point. Here in the centre cape town is pretty, colourful and I feel very secure walking around on my own.
I reach long street, stop in for a quick burger and milkshake at the Royale eatery and then continue on Long street walking almost to the end of it snapping a few shots as I go but then taking a left and heading toward a boardwalk along the ocean. Somewhere I have a map but I’m not really using it so I’m sure I don’t take a direct route, but it’s one of my favourite things to do in cities, just wander without much purpose. Eventually I reach the posh boardwalk area and an enticing food market (If only I weren’t already so full)
From this little neighbourhood by the sea you’re far enough from the world famous table mountain (One of the oldest mountains in the world apparently) that you can get some good views and photos from the place.
I wander through this touristy neighbourhood happily also looking for ATM’s to pull out money for my upcoming overlanding trip but find none here that don’t charge me a crazy fee. (If you’re looking NEDbank was free for me.) It’s cool to pass by some dry docks on my way back to the hostel to catch a manchester united game if the wifi is good enough.
Obviously this is just a small taste of what cape town has to offer. (Understatement of the year) But the good news is myAfrica trip raps up in cape town too, so I’ll have time to go up table mountain and see some other gems around cape town too, but for now that will wait asI’m headed off the next morning on a 20 day over landing tour where we’ll be camping and crossing four countries in a retro fitted truck with Nomad tours Over landing. So South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, get ready for me.
